Elmiron Resources Overview

The attorneys at Bodden and Bennett Law Group are evaluating claims from individuals having been diagnosed with maculopathy following their use of Elmiron.

About the Elmiron Eye Disease Lawsuit

Since 1996, millions of people have taken Elmiron for painful bladder syndrome, or interstitial cystitis (IC). Researchers began discovering a possible connection between the drug and a serious eye disease called maculopathy in 2015. Yet Janssen Pharmaceutical, the manufacturer of Elmiron, has failed to warn the public about the risks despite accumulating evidence.

The drug is typically prescribed in doses of 300 milligrams daily to IC patients. Some doctors have prescribed 800 or even 1500 milligrams in more severe cases. Millions of people are taking a drug that may one day deprive them of their sight, and untold numbers are likely to be already suffering serious health consequences.

A Hidden Danger

Elmiron was not known to be associated with risks until 2015 when Emory Eye Center doctors identified an eye condition they hadn’t seen before in six women. There was no apparent cause for this form of maculopathy. All six women had taken Elmiron for years, according to further investigation.

Further studies released in 2018 and 2019 confirm Elmiron’s relationship with maculopathy. It is not yet known how Elmiron causes maculopathy.

The manufacturer does not list eye disease as a possible side effect in spite of mounting evidence. Elmiron has already caused serious eye injuries to hundreds of thousands of people, and there is no telling how many more are at risk.
